Yvette Meza Vega of Santa Ana is serving as a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute intern this summer.

Meza Vega, a student at UCLA, is one of 39 CHCI interns assigned to congressional offices on Capitol Hill for an eight-week period from from June to August.

“Having an internship opportunity with CHCI means taking a closer step towards serving my Latino community and all communities of color on a national level. This opportunity will give me the experience and knowledge I need in order to continue developing a career in educational reform and public policy,” said Meza Vega. She is majoring in psychology and is serving with the office of Rep. Loretta Sanchez.

“This year’s summer interns represent the diversity and vast potential of the Latino community,” said Esther Aguilera, CHCI president and CEO. “CHCI is committed to providing unmatched public policy experience and leadership training for Hispanic youth to create a workforce pipeline to positions on Capitol Hill and in public policy.”

Interns conduct legislative research, monitor day-to-day hearings, manage constituent communications and assist with general policy matters.

They participate in weekly CHCI leadership development sessions, engage in policy discussions and meet with corporate representatives, national elected officials and foreign dignitaries.

Among the supporters of the congressional internship program is The Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros Foundation, founded by two Orange County residents who support educational programs.

The Cisneros Family Endowment, created with a pledge of $700,000 from The Gilbert and Jacki Cisneros Foundation, will provide support for two Latino students from California to participate in the internship program every year. The Cisneroses’ gift is the largest contribution from an individual donor in the institute’s history.

Information about the internship program is available at chci.org.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that provides provides leadership development programs and educational services to students and young emerging leaders.
